Surface Contamination

Radioactive material which has been deposited on surfaces such as floors, tools, benches, etc., is called surface contamination. It may be loosely deposited, much like ordinary dust, or it may be fixed quite firmly by some chemical or physical means such as chemical bonding, adsorption, adhesion, and so on. This distinction is important, and surface contamination is classified on the basis of how easily it can be removed.
