Liquid Scintillation Counters

Liquid scintillation counting is used mainly to detect low energy beta emitters. The scintillator is a solution of organic or aqueous compounds into which the sample to be analysed is mixed. Glass or transparent plastic vials are used for the scintillator so that the light can reach the photomultiplier tubes of the counting system. For example, tritium  concentrations in urine, known as bioassays , are measured using this technique.
